The play is set in the village of Llanilla, a village in a Welsh National Park. The cricket team of the village is preparing to play their arch rivals, the team from the village of Llaretfa, for the coverted, annual 'Colonel Newcombe Silver Trophy'.

The time is some two years into the future, and the country is suffering from a serious downturn in its economy. It has become known as the dark times. Any attempts at economic regeneration are being encouraged, almost to the point where previous planning restrictions are not so much being waived, as abandoned.
